South Carolina State Flag
In 1861 in honor of soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War, our flag was adopted. Blue, like the color of the soldiers uniforms, with a silver crescent and Palmetto tree. The crescent a symbol from the soldiers hats and the tree stands for a famous 1776 battle on Sullivan Island's Fort Moultrie, a palmetto log fortification. Here our soldiers fired against 11 ships attacking from the Charleston Harbor. The ships caught fire and our soldiers thought the fire looked like the Palmetto Tree.
